Stucco Repair and Application in Santa Monica
Half the housing stock on the Westside wears stucco, and salt air a mile from the water is hard on all of it. We apply traditional three-coat stucco on new walls and additions, and we do a great deal of stucco repair on everything from hairline cracking to blown sections where water has been getting behind the wall for years. Colour and texture matching is the part clients care about most, and it is the part we spend the most time on. We also handle full stucco remediation, which means removing compromised material back to sound substrate, correcting the flashing or drainage that caused the failure, and rebuilding the wall assembly properly.
Why Our Patches Disappear
Anyone can trowel mud onto a wall. Making a repair vanish takes matching the texture pass, the aggregate size, and the colour, then feathering the patch to a natural break rather than stopping in the middle of an elevation. We mock up texture on a board and hold it against your wall before we start. Just as important, we find out why the stucco failed. Patching a crack under a leaking window flashing simply hides the damage for another year, so we look at the flashing, the weep screed, and the grade before we quote. Licensed, insured, and straight with you about whether you need a repair or remediation.
When Stucco Needs Attention
Cracks are wider than a business card
Hairline crazing is cosmetic. Anything above a sixteenth of an inch is a water path into the wall and calls for professional stucco repair before the substrate is affected.
The surface sounds hollow
Tapping a wall and hearing a drum means the stucco has debonded from the lath. That section will come off eventually, and it is far cheaper to address before it does.
Staining or efflorescence is showing
Rust streaks, dark bleeding below windows, or white mineral bloom all indicate water moving through the assembly rather than shedding off it.
You are re-siding or adding on
New walls, additions, and garage conversions need a full three-coat system that ties into the existing envelope, not a skim over foam.
How Stucco Work Runs
1. Diagnosis
We probe the affected areas, check flashing, weep screed, and grade, and determine whether you are looking at surface repair or remediation. You get that answer in writing.
2. Cut back and prep
Removal to sound material, replacement of damaged lath, paper, and flashing, and installation of new weather-resistive barrier where the assembly was compromised.
3. Scratch, brown, and finish
Traditional three-coat application with proper cure time between coats. Rushing this step is the single most common cause of new stucco cracking.
4. Texture and colour match
Finish coat applied to the matched texture, then colour brought to match the existing wall. On large repairs we recommend re-coating to a natural break so nothing reads as a patch.

How long does stucco last?
Traditional stucco lasts 50 to 80 years with proper maintenance. Synthetic EIFS stucco lasts 20 to 30 years. Regular inspection and prompt stucco repair of cracks prevents moisture intrusion.
What causes stucco to crack?
Common causes include foundation settling, improper mixing during installation, moisture damage, and thermal expansion. Hairline cracks are cosmetic, but cracks wider than 1/16 inch need professional stucco repair to prevent water damage.
How much does stucco remediation cost?
Stucco remediation, which means fully removing and replacing damaged stucco, costs $8 to $12 per square foot. This is more extensive than simple stucco repair and is needed when moisture has compromised the substrate underneath.
Can you match my existing stucco texture?
In almost every case, yes. We mock up the texture on a board and hold it against your wall before we start. Where a wall has faded unevenly we recommend carrying the finish to a corner or a natural break so the repair does not read as a patch.
