Why Choosing the Right Masonry Contractor Matters

Masonry hides its mistakes. A retaining wall with no drain pipe looks identical to one built correctly on the day it is finished, and the difference only appears after the second wet winter, when the wall starts leaning and the repair costs more than the original build. The same is true of a paver driveway on a thin base, a slab poured without steel, a stucco patch troweled over a leaking flashing, and a repointing job done in the wrong mortar, which quietly destroys the brick it was meant to protect.

So the things worth checking before you hire anyone: an active California licence and current insurance, a written scope that states base depths and drainage rather than just a lump sum, references on work of the same type, and a contractor willing to explain what is going underneath. Be careful of bids that come in far under the others. In this trade that gap is almost always the footing, the base rock, or the drainage, and you will pay for it later with interest.
