How We Work
Every masonry project — walls, stonework, patios, or concrete — runs the same way. One crew chief from the first site walk through final cleanup.
1. Site walk and design
We come out to your property, take measurements, talk through the project (materials, look, scope), and draft a design. Real-stone and brick samples brought to the site so you see them in your own light before committing.
2. Engineering and permits
Walls over three feet, built-in gas features, new driveways tying into the public apron — we handle the engineered drawings and pull the Santa Monica permit so you don’t chase paperwork. Drainage and footings designed for your soil.
3. Build, finish, cleanup
Excavation, base prep, hand-set masonry, finishing details, and a final walk-through. One crew chief owns the job start to finish. Site cleaned daily and a flat-rate price that doesn’t move.
When You Need Masonry
Masonry is the right call across a wide range of Santa Monica projects:
- You’re terracing a hillside or holding back a slope — retaining walls in brick, block, or natural stone are engineered to handle California soil and seismic loads.
- You want a real garden or privacy wall — masonry blocks sound, defines space, and ages beautifully where wood fences rot.
- You’re upgrading the patio, walkway, or driveway — flagstone, paver, or cobblestone laid on an engineered base outperforms slab concrete for decades.
- You need new concrete flatwork or footings — driveways, slabs, pool decks, or the footings under every masonry wall over three feet.
- You want natural stonework as a feature — boulder staircases, cobble courtyards, dry-stack walls, stone façade veneer, fireplace cladding.
- You’re prepping a home for sale — clean masonry, fresh stonework, and a paver entrance change how a property photographs and shows.
We'll come out for a free site walk, bring real material samples, and design the project around your home and your soil. Call: (310) 356-9429

What Affects the Cost of Masonry
Masonry pricing varies by material, scope, and site conditions. The biggest cost drivers across walls, stonework, patios, and concrete:
- Material choice. CMU block is the budget option; brick and concrete pavers are mid-range; cut stone, natural boulder, and travertine sit at the top.
- Square footage and linear feet. Bigger projects scale efficiently per foot, but larger crews and more material days drive up the total.
- Engineering and permits. Walls over three feet, retaining walls on slope, and built-in gas features need engineered drawings and a Santa Monica permit. We handle both.
- Base and drainage prep. The work you don’t see — compacted base, drainage tile, footings, rebar — is half the project. Skipping it is why cheap masonry fails inside five years.
- Finish and detail work. Cap stone, mortar joint style, stamped or colored concrete, polymeric jointing, edge restraints — each adds line items.
- Site access. Hillside lots, narrow gates, and limited equipment access slow the crew and add labor time.
After the site walk we quote your project flat-rate — material, base prep, drainage, build, permit, and cleanup all included. No surprise add-ons.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build a wall in Santa Monica?
Most residential walls are 1–3 weeks from breaking ground to cleanup. Engineering and permit can add 2–4 weeks before that.
Do I need a permit?
Walls over three feet typically need a permit and engineered drawings in Santa Monica. We handle the permit and engineering coordination.
What's the difference between block, brick, and stone?
CMU block is the structural workhorse, often veneered with brick or stone. Brick is timeless and good value. Cut stone is premium and unique. We’ll show you samples in your light.
Will the wall last?
Yes — properly engineered and drained masonry walls last 50+ years. The two failure modes are bad drainage and undersized footing, both of which we engineer around.
Are you licensed?
Yes — we’re a licensed California masonry contractor, fully insured and bonded. License number and insurance certificate on request.
