Patios & Paving Done Right

Patios and paving for Santa Monica homes — flagstone backyard patios, brick walkways, paver driveways, cobble courtyards, and pool surrounds. We engineer the base so the surface doesn't settle, sink, or shift over time.

How We Work

Every masonry project — walls, stonework, patios, or concrete — runs the same way. One crew chief from the first site walk through final cleanup.

1. Layout and material

We mock up the pattern on-site with sample pavers, talk through edge treatments and joint width, and lock in the final layout before excavation.

2. Base and drainage

Excavation, geotextile fabric, compacted aggregate base, and drainage planning. This is where patios fail when done cheaply — we don’t cut here.

3. Set and finish

Pavers, flagstone, or brick set on bedding sand, hand-cut at edges, edge restraint installed, joints swept with polymeric or stabilized sand. Final compaction and cleanup.

When You Need Patios & Paving

A patio or paving project is the right call when:

  • You want an outdoor living room — a real patio defines the space and supports furniture, fire features, and traffic.
  • Existing concrete is cracked or stained — pavers laid over a prepped base are more durable and look 10x better.
  • You’re upgrading the driveway — paver driveways outperform asphalt and last decades longer than poured concrete.
  • Walkway from street to door — sets the first impression. Flagstone or brick reads premium.
  • Pool surround — natural stone or cool-deck pavers stay walkable in summer heat.
  • Drainage or settling problems — pavers handle ground movement (and individual stones can be reset) where slab concrete cracks.

What Affects the Cost of Patios & Paving

Patio and paving pricing is per square foot plus base prep. Depends on:

  • Square footage. Larger projects scale efficiently per square foot.
  • Material. Concrete pavers are most affordable; clay brick and travertine are mid-range; flagstone and cut stone are premium.
  • Base depth. Driveways need 8-12 inches of compacted base; patios need 4-6. Cheaping out here is why patios fail.
  • Pattern. Running bond is fastest. Herringbone, basketweave, and custom patterns add cut waste and labor.
  • Edge treatment. Soldier course, cut stone border, or steel edge restraint — affects look and price.
  • Site prep. Demo of existing concrete or pavers, grade work, and drainage all add line items.

We'll quote your project flat-rate after the design — base, drainage, edging, and cleanup included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pavers or concrete slab?

Pavers cost more upfront but last longer, handle ground movement without cracking, and individual stones can be lifted and reset. Concrete is cheaper but cracks in California soil over time and is hard to repair invisibly.

How long does a patio take?

1–3 weeks depending on size and demo. Base prep is half the time — we don’t skip it.

Will weeds grow through the joints?

Polymeric sand sealed joints lock the pavers and resist weeds for 5-10 years before re-application. Stabilized sand and concrete grout are also options.

Do you handle drainage?

Yes — pitch the surface, install French drains or surface drains where needed, and route water away from the house foundation. Drainage is part of every project we do.

Can you match my existing patio or driveway?

Usually yes — we identify the paver line and color, source from the same manufacturer if available, or blend with a close match if it’s discontinued.
